Quite frankly I'm terrified about Midnight Meat Train. I've always wanted to see what Ryuhei Kitamura could do with a big budget American action movie, but if that movie's just another "J-Horror with roundeyes" this could kill his career over here before we ever get Versus II.

I'm just mindblown that apparently no one looked at his previous work and thought to keep that going. Swords, guns, kung-fu and bullet time are practically Kitamura's four food groups -- at least Tak Sakaguchi isn't trying to fool himself otherwise.

fuseji: the armchair martial artist.

Azumi is the only thing of Kitamura's that I like unreservedly -- the cheese factor of his other stuff is too crippling to allow it out of the "so bad it's good" category.

With Clive Barker, his concepts are wonderful, but when it comes to bringing them to film and television and games... they are just never ever executed convincingly.

All of this augurs ill; I see nothing but doom and crippled film fans along this timeline, cheapened and used, far from salvation. And yet, like the J-Horror actor staring at the covered thing in the box that moves just a little bit, against all wisdom, I'm going to have to take a look at it anyway...
